Bonnie Feaster Chapa’s Photography Accepted for the Little Boxes Exhibit at the Georgetown Art Center, Georgetown, Texas

Bonnie Feaster Chapa’s Photography Accepted for the Little Boxes Exhibit at the Georgetown Art Center

I went outside of my comfort zone on this one.  Typically, my art is created from photographs I have taken that, as I call it, “put the funk to it”.  I saw this call for art at the Georgetown Art Center which I have had the opportunity to exhibit at before for the Road Trippin Exhibit, and I loved the theme of Little Boxes and the idea behind it to create art inspired by the song “Little Boxes” by Malvina Reynolds.

“Little Boxes” is a protest song composed by Malvina Reynolds in 1962; it became a hit for her friend Pete Seeger in 1963. The song is a political satire about the development of suburbia and conformist middle-class attitudes.  You may know it from the TV series “Weeds” where the song was covered by numerous different artists on the show, including Regina Spektor, Death Cab For Cutie, and Linkin Park.

I was so excited to hear two of my photographs, without the funk :), were accepted for the exhibit that will include artwork by other various Texas artists featured including NJ Weaver, Catherine Small, and Sang-Mi Yoo.

One of my photographs accepted are “Once Upon A Time” which for me, represents what used to be a happy home, an imagined charmed, farmy cottage life and it is an abandoned shell with exception to the leaves off the trees and the family dining table left as it was.  Like the family just stood up from the table and left with no forwarding address.  My style has lots of color.  This being black and white is pretty rare for me, but an empty house has no “color”.  I came upon this house in Salado, Texas unexpectedly and the moment I saw this, I felt like I could not touch a thing there because it was sacred.  So, I captured this image and was left with the feeling that assumed ideals are not always as they appear.

“Urban Havana” is the second of my two photographs accepted.  Just as the name suggests, urban with all the glass and metal of a chic shiny skyscraper, but the colors reflected made me think of Little Havana; a tight knit, colorful cultural overload community in Miami.  But….. this picture was taken in Vegas….so, again, all the little boxes and the name may hint at one thing, but the imagined is another.  As the lyrics to the song imply, we can all try to conform to those middle class ideals and all look, act and be the same, but under the surface, we are all just real people, with real lives, with real stories that make us unique in our own ways and I think my photographs reflect that.  It’s ok to go outside of that ticky-tacky box and be different.
