Round Rock 100 Days Project 2015 by Bonnie Chapa
Title: “Faces In Ordinary Things”
Since I was a kid, I have always “seen” faces in ordinary things and have a been a bit shy in sharing this with others. I saw the call for art for the Round Rock 100 day project and this idea to take pictures of “Faces In Ordinary Things” was honestly, the first option that came to mind. I just knew once I started it, I wouldn’t see a single face because that’s what happens when you are actually making an effort and looking for it. I had to make a decision on the project. I was at the doctor’s office and saw #IfYouGotEmSmokeEm. I stopped dead in my tracks and I knew, I wasn’t going to be short of faces over the next 100 days!
The images I captured, I would share with family and friends over social media as the 100 day project went along, still very shy about sharing them publically. The next thing I knew, people were sending me their pictures of things they were now seeing faces in. They had their own collections started! That was amazing to me.
My thought process changed and I began to see the conclusion of my project was a much bigger picture. Not only with things, but with people too, we should look past the outside… all the layers… and see what we have in common rather than our differences. When we do this we see our HUMANITY. That piece of ham has a face just like that coffee pot. They are different, but share something similar.
We hold so much power in our influences of each other. If people who could not see faces before now can’t see past them, what did we do to influence this change? We changed our perspective and opened our minds to creativity and acceptance of ordinary things and ordinary people with great gifts to give. When we can recognize ourselves in others (in this case, ordinary things), we learn to accept each other. We may be each very different, but together we are all so very similar and have our commonalities. We just have to “face” it and then find it.
